We fly free flight models. They do not have radios in them so they are on their own once they are launched.

What is Free Flight?
FREE FLIGHT is the magic of model airplanes flying free, sometimes climbing as high as the clouds or just circling silently indoors under a gymnasium ceiling. For experts and new modelers alike, such flights give rise to feelings of wonder and satisfaction. For many fliers involvement in the sport of free flight begins after first watching a model airplane fly beyond expectations. But such viewers should be made aware of the possible unanticipated outcome of their involvement. What may start as just curiosity about model aircraft can develop into a rewarding life-long interest. Unsuspecting newcomers to the sport frequently become strongly committed to model aviation.
Motivated beginners soon pursue the quest for model building skills, with their minds filled with visions of their aircraft sailing far and away overhead.In the early learning phases, most “students” are helped with structured mentoring by experienced modelers as part of an educational program. With good construction methods and flight adjustment techniques reasonably mastered, involvement in organized free flight competitions becomes the usual next step. Once the “competition bug” gains firm hold, the process of building, flying and competing in contests becomes a way of life.
Long-time devotees to model aviation will confirm that free flight presents unlimited constructive challenges for youths and adults. Participants acquire and apply a knowledge base of model building materials, tools, construction methods and engineering concepts, and in the process learn to incorporate good aerodynamic principles in their aircraft. In return, the sport of free flight offers many personal rewards including lessons well learned, knowledge and judgement gained, lasting friendships made, and opportunities taken to compete with model aircraft that fly free of earthly bonds.
